Glutathione in its reduced form, GSH, is the tripeptide γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinylglycine. Its first link is unusual: glutamate joins cysteine through its side-chain γ-carboxyl rather than its α-carboxyl, a difference that no mass measurement can see. The free cysteine thiol makes the molecule redox-sensitive, and two molecules oxidise to the disulfide GSSG, a separate substance.
