Humanin is a peptide of 24 residues, MAPRGFSCLLLLTSEIDLPVKRRA. Its coding sequence lies within MT-RNR2, a gene of the mitochondrial genome, and a set of nuclear genes encodes humanin-like peptides of similar length. The peptide came to light in 2001, when a cDNA screen in neuronal cells challenged with genes of familial Alzheimer's disease picked it out.
